Who We Are
Created in 1956, the Memorial Society of BC is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization. We are registered under the BC Societies Act and operate under the direction of a volunteer board of directors.
Board Members
Steve Kennedy – President
Steve is a seasoned marketing and communications executive, currently working in a senior role at the University of British Columbia. He oversees alumni engagement communications, participates in UBC's integrated fundraising and brand marketing efforts, and manages venue rental marketing. Before working at UBC, he served as a strategic planner and client services lead at the Vancouver – based offices of global advertising agencies (BBDO, Grey and DDB). Past clients include Expedia, Labatt Breweries/InBev, Starbucks, Telus and BC Lottery Corp. Steve is a longstanding MSBC board member since 2017, and an UBC alum, with a B.Com. (Marketing) from UBC’s Sauder School of Business.
Haely Lindau – Vice President
Haely works as a consultant with non-profit boards providing governance advice, CEO 360 reviews, and administrative support. Her undergrad degree is in Business Administration, and she has a Masters in Nutritional Science. She has founded and operated several businesses, was the Executive Director for a non-profit organization for seven years and has worked in Silicon Valley with precision nutrition start-ups. She lives in Vancouver and has two wonderful daughters. She loves to be active and enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her dog, Misha.
Aimée Lindenberger – Secretary
Aimée is the Founder of Refocus Fundraising, and brings over 20 years of marketing and communications experience, a tender heart, insightful mind, and drive to make meaningful connections with supporters to every organization she works with. As one of the first in the world to complete a certificate in Philanthropic Psychology, she shares new approaches with charities across Canada — from the largest national organizations to local nonprofits — helping them engage their supporters more deeply, particularly in legacy giving, which is her passion.
Aimée has held leadership roles on the Greater Vancouver Chapters of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Jennifer Potter – Treasurer
Jennifer has over 15 years’ experience as a Senior Estate Specialist/Trust Officer for a local financial institution. She joined the MSBC board in 2020 and is currently serving in the role of Treasurer. Her passions include traveling, the Arts and collecting orchids and carnivorous plants.
Verena Foxx – Member at Large
Verena Foxx and her family joined the MSBC in 1990. She has served in different capacities on the MSBC board to support her interest in both consumer advocacy and in the inevitability of end-of-life. Verena is a retired Early Childhood/Literacy Educator and Education Consultant with the Vancouver School Board. Previously she was on Faculty at UBC in the Child Study Centre, and prior to that, she ran a progressive Early Childhood School in (West) Berlin. Her long-time side-hustle has been to write columns for BC business, education and lifestyle publications. Currently, she writes a monthly column for INSPIRED 55+. Verena is a long-time practising yogi, cyclist, and swimmer, with a lifelong interest in the arts.
Gord Plottel – Member at Large
Gord is a retired lawyer, having practiced law for thirty-three years as a commercial litigator at a large national law firm. He holds degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. He has sat on the boards of several sport, recreation and cultural organizations. He joined the MSBC board in 2021. He lives in Vancouver with his wife, and has three adult children.
Andrew Mellenger – Member at Large
Andrew has spent more than 20 years working in the digital and technology sector as a leader, product creator, and solution strategist. He has the ability to map complex business issues into effective, thoughtful, easy to use solutions. Currently the principal at a boutique web-development agency, he has worked for brands and non-profits like SmartSweets, Business in Vancouver, The Oppenheimer Group, UC Davis, alumni UBC, BC Children’s Hospital and others. Andrew joined the MSBC board in 2022 with hopes to help with digital communications tools such as the website and email marketing.
Colin Chan – Member at Large
Colin has almost 17 years of experience, working in non-profit cooperative housing. He joined the MSBC board in 2024 and is serving as a member at large. His interests include travelling, music, ta-chi, and time spending with family & friends.
Nicole Dirssers – Member at Large
Nicole Dorssers, MBA, MPEd, is Executive Director, Strategic Engagement at Simon Fraser University, overseeing Alumni Relations and Ceremonies and Events. With over 18 years of experience in alumni engagement, advancement, and governance within both university and not-for-profit sectors, Nicole has demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering community engagement, driving transformational change, and advancing strategic initiatives. Her expertise in cultivating robust, collaborative relationships within the university and the broader community has been pivotal in enhancing organizational impact and strengthening community connections.
Wayne Singular – Member at Large
Wayne joined the MSBC board in 2024 and has over 30 years of professional accounting
experience. He resides in Kamloops, BC where he has been an Associate Teaching Professor at
Thompson Rivers University since 2012. He enjoys outdoor activities along with camping
adventures with family and friends.
Staff
Peter Toppings – Executive Director
Peter (he/him) brings over twenty-five years of experience in administration, program development, financial management and partnership building to the position of Executive Director. Former positions have included Director of Community Health at the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Co-Creator and Manager of the Patient Voices Network with ImpactBC. He has a strong interest in end-of-life issues, fostered through extensive work with seniors and people living with chronic health conditions, and from personal experiences with the loss of loved ones.
Suzy Thomas – Member Support
Suzy started her journey with the Memorial Society in January 2021. With a long history of working in retail and a strong commitment to customer service, Suzy brings this enthusiasm to her position. Whether interacting with members over the phone, by email or in person, she is welcoming, compassionate, and knowledgeable and eager to support new and existing members.
Suzanne Klassen – Member Support
Suzanne joined the member support team at the Memorial Society in June 2024. She comes with a rich history of working with not-for-profits, providing information, support and referrals. Suzanne is adept at working with diverse populations including seniors and vulnerable groups. She approaches customer service with respect, sincerity, calmness and warmth.
